In the first piece of this series we talked about flow being a state of being that emerges when a living system is actually receiving what it needs and using it in a harmonious way. Balancing the different types of energy and the qualities that make every day possible.

And why most of us are not in it.

This piece is all about that path back to this harmony where flow is naturally emerging even through the hard parts.

Let's go back to the beginning

Think about a baby.

It's the most dependent thing there is. They rely so heavily on caretakers. To protect, love and nourish them. Women's bodies immediately get ready to nurse that infant from their own bodies, providing the immune protection and nourishment that they need.

Without this intense phase of adapting to the world, resting and deep nourishment I wouldn't be here writing this piece nor you would be reading it.

The word we use to describe such a crucial thing for early human life comes from the old French and Latin, nutrire, which means to feed, to nurse, to foster.

But go deeper still, past the Latin, and you find the Proto-Indo-European root: sna. Meaning to swim. To flow.

Nourishment then, at its oldest root, means to allow something to move.

Not to fill. Not to fuel or optimize.

To let flow.

I find that so beautiful. Because it means that when we talk about nourishment we have always, been talking about more than food, the energetic result.

To nourish is to let flow

Flow emerges not only from what we eat but from how we breathe, how we sleep, how we move, how we connect, even how we think.

So when we talk about nourishment, it means every level.

Real food nourishes the body. But so does real rest. Real breath. Real time in nature. Real depth in the ideas we let in and the conversations we have.

We have built a world optimized for stimulation and convenience, and in doing so have systematically interrupted the conditions that allow life force to move, build and deepen. We are abundant in inputs but starving for the flow that moves life within us.

This is why we love this word so much. Because in the deepest sense, to nourish is the practice of restoring those conditions. Of giving the body, the mind, and the spirit the inputs they were designed to receive so that life can flourish, die to be reborn again.

The question we sit with today is this:

What does restoring those conditions actually look like?

Elemental flow

Last week we introduced the five element framework from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Not as fixed building blocks like how we normally think about them but as phases, ongoing energetic processes that govern both the nature inside and outside our bodies.

We looked at what blocks each one.

Now let's look at them from the lens of nourishment.

What actually makes them flow?

To Nourish Water

Free and practical
Sleep that is actually restorative, not just horizontal.
Dark quiet evenings.
Ten minutes outside without shoes. Standing on actual ground has measurable effects on inflammation and nervous system regulation.
Jumping. Trampolines, jumping jacks, skipping, bouncing on the balls of your feet. Your lymphatic system has no pump. Unlike blood, lymph only moves when you do.

Deep and internal
Letting yourself not know something for a moment without immediately reaching for an answer.
Stillness without your phone.
Time near actual water.
Sitting with your back against something that grows.

Emotional
Allowing yourself to rest without earning it first. Water doesn't rush. It descends, pools, waits, and finds its way. Nourishing this element means giving yourself permission to do the same.

Investment
Mineral-rich, slow-cooked, deeply warming foods.
Bone broth, kidney, black sesame, seaweed, walnuts.
Terraviva directly tonifies the kidney Qi, the deepest energy reserves you run on.

To Nourish Wood

Free and practical
Movement that actually feels good, not punishing.
Body tapping rhythmically along arms, legs, chest and lower back first thing in the morning.
Making noises. Loud exhales. Long sighing. Even gargling. All of these activate the vagus nerve, the nerve that controls your entire rest-and-digest response. The louder and longer the better.

Deep and internal
Time to dream without immediately making it productive.
Honest creative expression, cooking, writing, painting, rearranging the furniture because it needed to change.

Emotional
Letting yourself feel what you feel without immediately managing it into something useful. Stagnant emotions block Liver Qi more reliably than almost anything else. Wood wants to grow. Sometimes the most nourishing thing you can do is get out of its way.

Investment:
Liver, beets, leafy greens, sour foods.

To Nourish Fire

Free and practical
Hum like you mean it. When you hum you are literally vibrating your vagus nerve, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, moving stuck energy and calming the whole system down.
Morning sunlight on your skin before the screen.
Talk to your cells. Gratitude, intention, even just telling your body it's safe activates measurably different physiological responses than chronic internal criticism. Your cells will listen.

Deep and internal
Real conversation that goes somewhere.
Cooking for someone you love.
✓ Long hugs and physical touch with people you love.

Emotional
Laughter that catches you off guard.
Letting yourself be seen by someone safe. Fire doesn't perform. It just burns, brightly and simply, when given the right conditions.

Investment
✓ Warming spices: cinnamon, cardamom, ginger.
Terraviva's bovine heart strengthens Heart Qi and supports the mental clarity and emotional steadiness that Fire needs to stay lit.

To Nourish Earth

Free and practical
Warm slow-cooked meals eaten sitting down with no distractions.
Eating at consistent times.
Splashing cold water on your face. The mammalian dive reflex. When cold water hits your face your heart rate drops almost immediately through trigeminal-vagal nerve activation. It resets the nervous system faster than almost anything else and costs nothing.

Deep and internal
Routines that feel like a home rather than a cage.
Being held, literally, by people or places that feel safe.

Emotional
Allowing yourself to receive. Earth is the mother element and the most depleted in modern life precisely because we ask it to give constantly without ever filling it back up. It asks to be tended the way you would tend something you love.

Investment
Pumpkin, sweet potato, oats, rice, dates.
Colostrum, which seals and strengthens the gut lining so that everything else you eat can actually be received.
Terraviva provides a full daily serving of colostrum

To Nourish Metal

Free and practical
Deep diaphragmatic breathing, which sounds simple and changes everything when you actually do it consistently.
Hit yourself with your hands. Body tapping rhythmically along arms, legs, chest and lower back stimulates Qi flow, releases stagnation and awakens circulation. Particularly effective first thing in the morning.

Deep and internal
Letting something go that you have been holding. The ritual of actually finishing things instead of abandoning them halfway.
Spending time in air that is genuinely fresh.

Emotional
Grief, when it comes, allowed to move through rather than stored somewhere it wasn't meant to stay. Metal teaches that nourishment is not only about what you take in. It is equally about what you are willing to release.

Investment
Pungent foods: radish, garlic, onion, white pear.
Ginger, which in TCM kindles digestive fire and opens the pathways so everything else can actually land.

Choose Nourishment

To nourish is to let life move in all of these dimensions. Letting the energy that flows through you form and harden, sow and reap, bend and grow, blaze and shine, soak and descend.

Remove any one of those and the harmony will be affected.

And in a world that has made that harder than it should be, choosing real nourishment at every level is perhaps the most radical and necessary thing we can do.

Wishing you wellness,
Natalia
